It's Official!

Happy New Year!!!

How has the start of your year been? I know here at TBR our start of the year was

I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E!

Let me share with you the update many of you may have been on the edge of your seats for: the computer lab and library. I am so overjoyed to say that the project is finished, and the room has officially been launched with two ribbon-cutting ceremonies! This blog will give a rundown of both ceremonies, held on the 10th of January and the 16th of Ja

nuary.

1st Opening

The opening on the 10th of January was held on a Saturday and was mainly between the club and a few invited guests, including family friend Micheala and an aunty of mine who is the head of Ghana’s CID, Ms. Lydia Donkor (also known as Aunty Yaako).

Our day started off calm, but I could feel hints of excitement in everything we did. After about 30 minutes spent in the soon-to-be former classroom, looking through books that were recently donated, I gave a short speech and we did some introductions. Then finally, it was time for the official ribbon cutting. Fun fact: this was the first ribbon-cutting ceremony I had ever been to, let alone the first one where I was the person holding the knife to cut the ribbon. Let’s just say I felt pretty awesome!

The children eagerly rushed inside to see the room and the computers, and it was so heartwarming to see their excited faces. I even loved how some of them said they were getting cold because both air conditioners that were installed were on.

We ended the day with a short game that ended up getting cancelled because the energy was a bit too high (you can’t blame them), and some packs of food. I felt really pleased going home that day, knowing that I had made an impact on those children’s lives in a way I never imagined I could. But let me not bore you too much. See the video for yourself!

2nd Opening

The second ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday, the 16th of January, on a school day, so the audience was much bigger and the event was more formal.

Honestly, I was really nervous before giving my speech to that many students, members of the school administration, and Sakumono and Police officials. But after taking a deep breath, going over my speech again with my parents, and reminding myself to be true in expressing how I felt, I am proud to say that I was not only clapped for once or twice, but four times, including twice during my speech!

The ribbon cutting after my speech felt even more magical as I was surrounded by my loved ones: my younger brother, mom, dad, two TBR students, my aunty who gave so much support to this project (shout out to Aunty Kuukwa), and of course the entire TWMA Primary School.

“We cut this in the name of the Father… of the Son… and of the Holy Spirit.”

SNAP!

Just like that, I watched a school officially open its first-ever library and computer lab. I recently read something in English class that said something along the lines of, “What makes a good school are its resources, such as an IT lab and a library.” That sentence rang in my ears as the two strands of ribbon parted to reveal a room the community had never seen before.

Seeing the reactions on everyone’s faces, the teachers, students, staff, police officers, administration, and all the people who supported me throughout this journey, truly solidified that this project is not just a project. It is a mission. A mission that will last not just for today or tomorrow, but for generations to come. That idea really excites me, and I hope it excites you too.

The pictures and videos are still on their way, but for now, here is a picture of yesterday’s agenda and the plaque next to the room.
