Have you ever had one of those days when nothing went how you planned, but it still worked out for the best? I did, just last Saturday.
In the morning, everything seemed to be going smoothly: the book was going to be an exciting read, the activity was going to be amazing, and we even had a special guest join us (my brother, Ezan)! Usually, when I have a day planned out as precisely as I did that day, I imagine how the lesson will go on the drive to the school. I even try to go as far as predicting what could go wrong and how I could handle it. So, you can imagine my shock when our car pulled into the parking lot and we saw a canopy, some speakers, and food set up. My imagination definitely did not take me that far! 😅
Long story short, the day started off as more of a “what can distract us the most” competition. The contestants were: the event, which was actually a campaign by the Presbyterian church nearby and seemed to escalate as we got deeper into the lesson; the rain that happened randomly for about five minutes; or the big container full of Legos shaped like a Lego, obviously foreshadowing the activity of the day.
The truth is, as much as I could say that our attention spans were short and that is why we were not able to go on with the lesson as planned, I was getting quite overstimulated myself! It just goes to show that not everything will go as planned, and depending on the situation, that is completely okay.
In the end, we pivoted from reading the storybook and jumped right into the latter part of our lesson: a spelling test (of course) and the activity. The Lego building activity, led by Ezan, was very successful. Each group had a lot of fun making up their own invention using the color of Legos they received. In the end, Ezan’s team won (suspicious) and my two-man team got last place (double suspicious).
