(27/06/26) The Ominous Visit To Titanic Beach Readers

What’s better than one? Two! Today, from the first warm-up activity we played to the final passing out of the snacks, I was joined by Keilah Taylor, an author, my co-host at Pa Gya, and a friend of mine from school. She was also accompanied by her mother, Ms. Dorcas, who has been a great supporter of Titanic Beach Readers.

We started the day with an interesting word scramble activity. After writing down the various scrambled words, we gave the students one minute to unscramble as many as they could. With 20 more seconds left on my timer, I asked the class how much they had done.

"Only two..?"

After four pleas to add 30 more seconds, I came to the conclusion that we need more practice with unscrambling. 😅 But it is quite interesting to compare the speed at which they unscrambled the words when they were written on the board to earlier this year when they were using physical pieces of paper. It seems like tactile learning could be more efficient!

Anyways, we finally managed to unscramble all of the words after a few attempts and hopped into our storybook. We read Mr. Bemphong’s House by Adwoa Badoe, which shared a beautiful message about not judging a book by its cover. We ended the day with a spelling test, and Keilah shared her book, The Ominous Life Of A Camp Counsellor, with the class. Due to our book exchange programme, one of the readers has already taken it home to read!

Before I end this post, I would like to share a short statement given by Keilah when she was asked later on how her day went.

“Being part of the Titanic Beach Readers Club has been such a meaningful and heartwarming experience. Spending time with the children at the Sakumono TMA2 Basic School and helping them build their confidence in reading, vocabulary and the English language feels extremely rewarding. Just seeing their excitement, curiosity, determination, dedication and willingness to learn reminds me of how powerful even a little encouragement can be. One step in the right direction can move mountains. God is hard at work on these days, making them the most memorable experiences for everyone present. The smiles, conversations and fun moments we share make the experience one I will always cherish. I’m so grateful to be a part of something that brings hope and opportunity to young learners and communities, and I look forward to doing it again!”
