(07/03/26) Trip to the Cinema!

Is there any better way to start a Saturday than to enjoy a movie with your literacy club? Yes, you heard it right, today was truly like no other Saturday because we spent it at the Silverbird movie theater in Accra Mall!

What does a movie have to do with literacy? A lot more than you think! Other than the obvious story building that a movie and creative writing share in common, watching a movie also enhances creativity in general. And as we all know, part of getting better at a language also means listening and watching content in that language! 

But we did not go to the movies today just to enhance our literacy. As I said earlier on in my first ever article, Titanic Beach Readers is more than just a club, we are an experience. For all of the students, except for one, this was their first ever time watching a movie in a cinema and for most it was their first time ever being to Accra Mall. Things like playing games on a computer, watching movies, visiting a museum or reading a book to some of us are things we simply choose to do if we have the time. However, other people don’t have luxury. These children are making memories and experiencing life’s “luxuries” that they may have not otherwise been able to do. In my eyes, I see that as a win, a very big win!

By the way, the movie we went to watch was called GOAT, it was partly produced by Steph Curry and was INCREDIBLE 10/10 would recommend. Let’s just say that at one point the whole theatre was practicing their “mehhhhhs”! 😅
