The usual gifts I give TBR students are stationery, storybooks, or cool trinkets, but this Saturday, thanks to the help and support of my cousin, Alyson, and her mom, Aunty Vivian, homemade chocolate chip cookies were today’s pleasant and delicious surprise! 😋
But we did more than just eat this lesson. Our storybook of the day was Dowa, the Caterpillar Who Could Not Stop Eating by Ann-Marie P. Owusu, which touched on the themes of greedines and fitting in.
At one point in the lesson, when we were doing sentence formation, I sat down on one of the student benches, surrounded by students holding out their books for me to check and mark. I remembered our first lessons together. Back then, I would write at the bottom of their pages when to put an ‘a’ in front of a word and when to put ‘an’. Or I would have to remind them to write five sentences when they had already lost motivation by sentence three.
Now, as I look around, books are being held out with fluent sentences and descriptive words, and students are submitting the number of sentences I asked for and more! Of course, we still have a long way to go, but once in a while, it is important to look back in order to see how far you have come.
Before we came to an end, I got the amazing opportunity to pass out the oral hygiene equipment that was donated to us by The Say Cheeze Foundation through Dylan Andrew, who was a part of the Girls Going Global group that came to Sakumono TWMA earlier on. The students were very grateful to receive their gifts, and I trust that brushing their teeth will quickly become one of their favorite parts of their day because of this new equipment.
We ended the day with our meals and cookies, and those who scored higher on the spelling test got extra cookies! Once again, thank you, Alyson and Aunty Vivian, for coming over today!
