LOGORRHEA. Don’t worry, that was not the word of the day! 😅 However, it was one of the many words we attempted to spell today as part of our impromptu activity. Today was one of those days where nothing went exactly as planned and if you stay to read more, you’ll see what I mean! 😉

The first surprise was that the children had actually read today's storybook, Kobby’s Trolley, before! This was the first time since we began that the students were already familiar with the book of the day. That definitely made answering questions easier, even though we only read to the middle.

Next was the writing activity… and this one did not go quite as well. I recently watched a musical production at my school with the main message being "Understanding Of Each Other," and today definitely reminded me of that.

The task was simple(ish): “Write your own introduction to a story.” This was after we had analyzed a story’s introduction and I had shared several books for inspiration. So, how did it go? Not the best. 😅 I highlighted the words “your own introduction” because most students either wrote an entire story or simply copied the reference text.

Although some people wrote beautiful introductions, I’m taking this as a learning moment. The truth is, though I thought my instructions were clear, they weren't quite there. The students got so excited by the references that they went with what they thought I wanted instead of using their own creativity. In the end, it wasn't any big drama; I marked the books, restated the instructions, and used the correct examples as a guide for the rest of the class. Hopefully, next time we do story building, we can practice "Understanding Of Each Other" even more!

Finally, the activity of the day. I originally had Pictionary in mind, but with the business of marking and spelling reviews, we ended up doing something else: “Whiteboard Spelling Bee.” Just like the name suggests, a word is called out (like: logorrhea!) and everyone comes up to the board one by one to try and spell it until someone gets it right. This was led by our very own Kennedy and Precious (our Assistant Head Girl) and it was a hit! I was super happy to see that we can still have fun even when things go exactly as planned!

Special shout-out to James (our Head Boy) because today was his birthday! 🎂

Thanks for reading to the end! If you liked this post, give it a heart and comment, “Happy Birthday James!” Scroll down for the pictures and videos from today!
