When you hear Titanic Beach Readers, youâd obviously expect that we read, right?
Well⌠in all honesty, until this year â 2025 â it had really only been me reading! đ Which is kind of bad for a book reading club, right?
That all changed one day when I was feeling a bit under the weather. I saw that my mother had engaged the children in an interactive activity where she called them up, row by row, to read a page in a book. As I watched from the sidelines, I could see the excitement and confidence radiating from the children. But I also noticed the errors, shyness, and areas for improvement that could help them become better readers.
Since that day, weâve tried at least once a month to invite the children to come up and read. But one day, Mom and I thought of a brighter idea â something that could help improve their reading skills and confidence in a faster and more sustainable way: Break-out Reading Sessions.
I guess Iâve finally gotten to the point, huh? đ
Our break-out reading sessions are simple but powerful: we form 10â11 small groups, each with 3â4 members (some are even one-on-one).
In each group:
There is one very strong reader and two or three average-level readers,
OR
Two or three readers who need support with a TBR member (like Miss Mafia, Gaia, Mom, etc.) who leads and supports them.
Shout-outs!
Want an example of a group thatâs made amazing progress this past month? I can give you three!
Miss Mafiaâs group (Nora, Oscar, and Prince)âThis group has made remarkable progressâespecially Nora, who now reads with so much confidence and clarity!
My group (yes, yours truly! đ Pius, Delight, and Lodina)âPiusâs reading confidence has grown a lot, and the girls are learning a very important lesson: patience!
Loisâs group (James and Abigail)âLois has shown incredible leadership in helping improve the reading skills of both James and Abigail!
The Bigger PictureÂ
I cannot stress enough how impactful this has been for TBR.
Now, children are excited to stand up and read in front of their classmates and give it their all. Higher-level readers finally feel challenged and are learning how to lead. And overall, the average reading skill in our classroom has gone from 45% to 55% in just a few weeks!
If you were to walk into one of our sessions, youâd definitely hear whispers, giggles, a couple of kids getting distracted, and plenty of mistakes. But thatâs the beauty of it all!
Weâre not chasing perfection. Weâre chasing familiarity.
With smaller, more intimate reading groups, it feels like youâre part of a communityâone that helps you when you make mistakes, laughs with you at funny pictures in a book, and grows alongside you as you develop your reading skills.
This not only takes away the fear of reading but also builds strong friendships based on encouragement and wanting the best for each other.
Wow, look at us! đ
Did you know?
Did you know that every team gets a different book? This is so that every team can have a book that fits their level, and also to give each team a sense of individuality, because you know here at TBR we keep it fresh!
