Vote by vote, tallies adding up by the second, the air got tense and the class fell quiet...Who would it be? Who would be our leaders for TBR for the next year? One more vote to count...
Wait, wait, wait! Before we get to this, letâs start from the beginning:
BackgroundÂ
On March 1st, 2025, the Titanic Beach Readers community came together and voted for the Head Boy and Head Girl of our club.
The idea actually stemmed from weeks earlier, when Dad mentioned it in passing! đ But here at TBR, we L-O-V-EÂ change and growth, so of course we took the idea seriously!
The following week, Mom, me, Dad, Aunty Priscilla (the class tecaher), and Aunty Georgina (the principal) each nominated one girl and one boy to run for prefectship. So in total, we had 10 candidates!
The week after that, we explained what a manifesto was and told the nominees to write one. We encouraged everyone to ask Aunty Priscilla for help if they needed it. Then, in the final week leading up to voting day, the nominees were encouraged to campaign to their peers.
Our ExpectationsÂ
As a Head Prefect, a lot is expected of you. From keeping your peers in check to acting as the second teacher and taking on new responsibilitiesâ it may seem like too much to a couple of 6-9 year olds. But what gave me confidence in the candidates was this:
They actually mentioned more expectations for themselves than we did!
Here are the key ones:
Making sure the class is quiet and focused during lessons or work time.
Keeping the class neat and tidy at all times.
Being a good role model to all their peers.
Following all the TBR rules.
Some candidates even added extra expectations of their own! And so far, the elected prefects have truly shown up when it comes to following the rules. Weâre so proud of the choices we made!
Voting Day
Finallyâit was the day. Not just any day... the day that we vote for our future TBR leaders.
Despite the misfortune of three candidates being absent (one had a representative), we were still able to successfully set up a realistic simulation of an actual voting process. Each candidateâeven those who couldnât attendâwas assigned a number, and the process was private and anonymous.
To be honest, I was bursting with excitement because of how official everything felt! đ
We began with the candidates presenting their manifestos, which were simple and easy to understand. (Kudos to you, Aunty Priscilla!) But we all agreed that Rebeccaâs manifesto really took the cakeâshe even included a fun motto!
After the manifestos, everyone lined up outside while Dad and I stood at opposite sides of the classroom. Dad managed the girlsâ station, and I handled the boysâ station. Each voter came in, wrote down the number of their chosen candidate, folded the paper, and handed it to Mom.(Letâs just say folding is not one of the TBR childrenâs strong suits!) đ
Who is it?
The room got silent. Everyone clenched their fists and leaned forward to hear the results.
âThe Head Boy and Head Girl for Titanic Beach Readers are⌠James and Rebecca!!!â
Everyone burst into a round of applause as James and Rebecca made their way to the front of the classroom. Alongside them, we also announced the Assistant Head Boy and Assistant Head Girl: Gerald and Precious!
With so much joy, anticipation, excitement, and passion, I truly think this moment deserves a spot in TBR history as one of the best days ever!
So, there you have it! So far, our prefects have been shining in both discipline and behaviorâand theyâve already proven that we made a great choice.
