To kick off the first week of June, I brought something new to TBR.
Two days before this Saturday, I sat at my desk researching and brainstorming fresh ideas to bring to the Titanic Beach Readers community, as I find that we have more fun when we engage in a wide variety of activities together. While researching, I stumbled upon an ESL website that introduced a game to me that I fell in love with. It was the perfect game.
I was super excited to introduce this game to them because, other than looking super fun, it was fast-paced and challenged their spelling skills. So, what is this marvelous game?
Board Race.
To play, you split the classroom into two separate groups and line them up in front of the whiteboard, which has a line going down the middle to indicate each team’s working space. Before starting, you give the person at the front of each line a cap-less marker, then: “3, 2, 1 … GO!”. Each team member takes turns running back and forth to the whiteboard, writing a word that relates to a topic I announce, for example: food!
The team that wins is the team that has the most words that are also spelled correctly.
We had a BLAST! Funnily enough, seeing the children rush to the board and run back reminded me of little ants picking apart a big piece of food. However, ants are best known for their teamwork … we, on the other hand, are not so strong in that sector 😅.
There was a bit of bickering due to miscommunication, and it led to some of the children getting frustrated or sad. That's when I knew we had our lesson of the day: Teamwork makes the Dreamwork!
We ended the day with candy and bofrot distribution, and we ended off the day with a new favorite game and a goal for the future: building teamwork skills.
Liked this post? Give it a heart and leave a comment on what new activities we should try next 😉!
Challenge: Try and list all of the words the TBR children wrote from the 2nd video!
