Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Trip 🇬🇭 (22/04/25)

Updated: Jul 1

On March 22nd, 2025, the TBR Club embarked on an exciting, encouraging, and historical adventure to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, Ghana. This was the FIRST-EVER field trip in TBR history and—let me tell you—it set a REALLY high standard!

Just arriving at the school, you could feel the excitement bubbling out of the building, ready to burst. Everyone was prepared with their backpacks, pocket change, and either a really detailed or really scarce idea of who Kwame Nkrumah was. On the bus, everyone was seated by height order which, not too surprisingly, didn’t stop them from having the most fun time of their lives! From singing Afrobeats songs (and totally getting the lyrics mixed up 😅), to the children leading their own traditional Twi chant-songs (with one of them even praising our bus driver!), to the distribution of snacks and drinks—which actually challenged the children’s math skills—our time on the bus was one of the GREATEST moments of the trip! 🚌📸

When we arrived, we were hit… hit by the mesmerizing beauty of the park! When learning about our first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, you might hear about his memorial park, where all of his history is documented—but I’m telling you, actually going there is a whole different story!

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Our wonderful tour guide, who patiently taught us and answered our questions.

  • The interactive audio and visual museum, which grabbed all of our full attention like hypnosis.

  • The mausoleum, where we learned the heart-touching story of Kwame Nkrumah’s wife, Fatia, and her dying wish.

  • The museum that displayed items Dr. Nkrumah used in his past (e.g. his coat, briefcase, mattress, etc.)—each with its own interesting background story.

  • Finally, the iconic wall with Kwame Nkrumah’s facial expressions and his most popular quote:

“I am not African because I was born in Africa, I am African because Africa was born in me.”

All of the above gave us a FULLY IMMERSIVE dive into who Kwame Nkrumah was and what he did for us - an experience that neither a history lesson nor a textbook could ever replicate!

FUN FACT

As we explored the park, the children—including silly Ezan—were on a mini hunt to find a peacock that had been wandering around in a very suspicious manner… almost like it was following us. Hmmm… perhaps a peacock stalker?!😂🤔🦚

Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the reception area (where they keep the car he used to drive, etc.), but we were still extremely grateful to experience everything else. From this trip, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that it definitely lived up to one of TBR’s biggest aims: to show that learning can ABSOLUTELY be fun!
